What’s your immunity to change?

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” We live most of our lives on automatic pilot. That is as true of individuals as it is of teams. Our teams tend to operate without being aware of the water they are swimming in. We typically are not conscious of the hidden assumptions and beliefs which drive our behaviour, be it on an individual level or as team dynamics. That’s the bad news.

The good news is that you can do something about it, for yourself and/or for your team.

The Immunity to Change framework, developed by Lisa Lahey and Robert Kegan of Harvard, allows you to discover the hidden beliefs which make you resist change. It helps you reveal your hidden commitments to yourself and others. It also allows you to experiment and test your assumptions about yourself and the world, and to consciously try out new behaviours in order to bring fundamental changes to how you lead or how your team operates.

In Choose Leadership, we love to use this framework because it always gets results, and results mean change happens more easily and you can lead with greater ease.

Brené Brown is a trailblazer in revealing how we unconsciously operate and navigate the world. She has helped us to better understand how what we have made up about ourselves and others gets in the way of creating the world we want to live in.

Unfortunately, her podcast series on Spotify, Dare to Lead, is no more.

Fortunately, all those great conversations with stellar guests are still available. And by way of what now seems like a parting gift, she had a conversation with Lisa Lahey about why change can feel so bloody difficult.

The best part? They used the Immunity to Change framework to guide their conversation, so you can hear Brené Brown working through her own immunity to change.

Listen below to experience the process vicariously through Lisa’s coaching of Brené.
